Key characteristics: Large duckweed with two vegetative meristems and many roots (7-21) per frond with 1 (rarely 2) perforating the prophyllum, the basal side of the frond is often purple, the apical side might have a red-purple spot above the node, the species forms olive turions that sink to the bottom of the water body to overwinter.
Ploidy: diploid, and tetraploid
Distribution: Cosmopolitan species occurs everywhere except at high latitudes and on some islands (e.g. New Zealand), the species is rare in south America.
